In the documentary 'Chasing Asylum' there were a number of things which I found incredibly shocking. I could not believe the way that a lot of asylum seekers attempting to reach Australia are treated. In particular I found it disturbing to find out that many children are kept in off shore detention centers. I found out that a lot of these children either bang their heads on the ground or try to self-harm because they are so mentally disturbed by the way they are being forced to live. I find this absolutely appalling. How can the Australian government treat young children this way? They are innocent victims of war and conflict and have no say in what happens to them. They have not made the decision to leave their country, their parents have! And in any case, even if they are illegally trying to enter Australia, they are entitled to basic human rights. Nobody should be forced to live in a detention camp like Naru!
If I was forced to leave my country in a small, overcrowded boat I think I would feel incredibly scared and anxious. Although I cannot relate to being an asyslum seeker I can empathise with their situation. They are not safe in their own country and need to flee to save their own lives. I think that all people should watch this documentary as it really makes you think about your own situation and how luck we are to live in such a safe country like New Zealand.
